SET installs electric drive in historic passenger ship "Kaiser Friedrich"
On December 2, 2022, SET Werft in Genthin received the order to convert the 137-year-old Berlin steamer "Kaiser Friedrich" to electric operation – for almost 80 years, it had been sailing on Berlin waters as a passenger ship.
Due to the increased staffing and the large amount of diesel the ship consumed, the operation became increasingly uneconomical and unecological, which is why the new owners of the ship since 2022, Volker Marhold and Julius Dahmen from the shipping company "Berliner Welle" decided to commission SET to save the steamship.
Julius Dahmen says: "We have had other ships overhauled here before and appreciate the good cooperation with the staff."
The installation of a customized "Torqueedo Deep Blue high-performance propulsion system" with lithium-ion high-voltage batteries with a total output of 400 kilowatt hours is expected to be completed in early August.
