The new transport dock from SET - a real one-off in inland shipping
The construction of the transport push barge was not only a challenge for SET, but also a strategic investment to actively counter the natural conditions of the Elbe. Anyone familiar with the Elbe knows that the regularly low water levels throughout the year pose a major challenge, especially when transferring newbuildings.
Low water has long since ceased to be an exception and severely restricts shipping for two thirds of the year - a point that SET was not prepared to simply accept. Their answer? A transport dock that functions independently of water levels and enables them to set sail reliably even with a draught of just over one meter.
After an intensive planning and construction process, which kept them busy in parallel with other major projects, they implemented the “transport dock” project after six months. The transport lighter is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2025.
But the dock is more than just a means of transportation - it is the result of months of work and innovation. With a length of 51 meters, a width of over 13 meters and a load capacity of 400 tons, the push barge sets new standards. The special technical feature lies in the special double floor, which is only 20 cm high and provides stability with the lowest draught. This minimalist design requires a clever combination of strength and buoyancy and makes the dock unique in the industry. This allows SET to transport even heavy ship sections safely and efficiently across shallow waters.
